OUR HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

In 1865, Mt. Moriah had its beginning in a Brush Harbor as the first black Baptist church organized in Gainesville, Florida. The first pastor was Reverend Cook.

The first framed building was built on Depot Avenue and later in the early 1960s moved to South East 11th Street under the pastorage of Reverend W.A. Miles. Which is the location of the current edifice. In 1963, Reverend L.A. Tillman served as Pastor of Mt. Moriah for twenty years (1963 – 1983). In 1971, the first fellowship hall was dedicated in honor of Deacon W.W. Johnson as Johnson Hall in appreciation of more than (30) years of service.

Reverend Dr. F.N. Gallmon, the current pastor has served as the pastor of Mt. Moriah since 1983. Under Rev. Dr. Gallmon’s leadership, we marched into our new building on January 8, 1989 and into a second phase of the expansion on February 25, 2007.
